Intent

At Woodingdean Primary School we believe that a quality English curriculum filled with rich opportunities should nurture and develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion. We aim to motivate children to be curious, independent, confident readers, writers and speakers who use a range of imaginative vocabulary and are inspired to dive into exciting texts. We recognise the central importance of spoken language in all elements of English. Our inclusive ethos is underpinned by a challenge for all approach where expectations are high and outcomes are aspirational. All children have the opportunity to gain understanding of different genres by planning, orally rehearsing, drafting, proof-reading, editing, improving and publishing their composition. The physical and mental well-being of our pupils is central to all we offer and therefore we strive to ensure that all our pupils have an opportunity to develop self-belief and a love of English regardless of environmental barriers.

Implementation

At Woodingdean Primary School, we aim to:

INSPIRE by offering a broad range of fun and creative opportunities for reading, writing, drama and discussion.

EXPLORE through our diverse and varied curriculum using rich, age appropriate, immersive media and other stimuli to promote language development.

ENGAGE by providing purposeful, child-led learning opportunities to motivate all pupils through well-planned engaging topics.

DEEPEN by encouraging questioning and critical thinking about the environment around them through the use of rich texts and giving real world opportunities to embed high quality English skills.

We have a rigorous and well organised English curriculum and framework. We strive to nurture a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately with purpose and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts.

We value the reciprocal nature of reading, writing, speaking and listening; this ensures lessons are full of purposeful and imaginative reading and writing opportunities which are often linked to an engaging topic. We believe that children need to develop a secure knowledge-base in Literacy, which follows a clear pathway of progression as they advance through the primary curriculum. We recognise the importance of having a clear understanding of children’s strengths and needs in order to plan appropriate challenges.

Curriculum maps outline context driven high quality texts and genres to support the planning and teaching. The texts used to support teaching and learning offer the opportunity for discussions around ethnicity, gender, diversity and current affairs.

Impact

A literary learner leaving Woodingdean Primary School is able to use language confidently and creatively through discussion and the written word. They are avid readers, opting to read for pleasure and are able to make sound book choices and discuss what they have read in an articulate manner. Children’s writing reflects their reading ability through their creative use and application of learnt language, vocabulary and structure. They understand the relevance and importance of what they have learnt in relation to real world concepts and enter their community as critical thinkers armed with the knowledge to question. Children value the importance of reading, writing, speaking and listening as vital skills that they will rely on as they move through life. Our children have a good understanding of their strengths, targets and their learning needs in order to continue to develop in literacy as they enter the wider world. The children produce evidence of work at a high standard of which they clearly take pride in. Our children leave school ready to embrace the world of literacy armed with the skills to make informed decisions and to successfully move forward as well-rounded human beings.
