History

“If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree. ” -  Michael Crichton

Intent

At Woodingdean Primary School, we want our children to experience a wider knowledge and discovery of the past, both ancient and more modern, building inquisitive, resilient and independent learners and thinkers who question and form opinions about historical events and people.

Implementation

Inspire by being able to show empathy for people of the past through understanding of situations, cause and effect and how these things have impacted on our lives today.

Explore by learning the key skills of historical knowledge such as understanding chronology, looking at comparisons, studying different aspects of different people’s lives and investigating a range of evidence from varied sources – recognising both primary and secondary – coming to their own conclusions.

Engage by developing curious minds by exploring history through images and artefacts, drawing on what they think at first sight and encouraging them to be history detectives, with their own thoughts and opinions. They will take part in exciting debates around people and events, weighing up different opinions and discussing how history looks from different points of view.

Deepen over their time with us, by moving from being able to place events or objects in order through to using evidence to build an image of the past and on to developing their own enquiry and sourcing their own evidence, maintaining the ability to question, think and conclude.

Impact

Our children will have passion and the courage to question further. They will have developed an interest and curiosity and the ability to share their opinion and be involved in discussions from different points of view. A knowledge of how society has built, its chronology, its mistakes and successes from as broad a spectrum as possible of viewpoints will leave our children with an open mind to new information whist still giving them a firm grasp of history and its impact on modern life. They will have a sense of chronology and how the human story has slowly built to what it is today, giving them a better understanding of how society works and the importance of their place as a citizen of the world.
