Languages

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
-Nelson Mandela

Intent

We believe learning a foreign language enriches our curriculum, and our aim at Woodingdean Primary School is to facilitate the children from Years 3 to 6 develop positive attitudes and skills that will lay the foundations for their future language learning.

Through our MFL curriculum we hope to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing and also develop our children’s understanding of the culture of others, and the similarities and differences between those cultures and their own.

Our aim is to prepare children for their KS3 language curriculum and to enable them to transfer their skills confidently and successfully.

Implementation

At Woodingdean Primary School we aim to:

  • INSPIRE Through stimulating, enjoyable and fully inclusive teaching our children will be encouraged to utilise their developing skills in spoken and written language in a variety of creative ways. For example, by incorporating role-play, games, action songs, rhymes, quality French texts and computer- based programs and websites.
  • EXPLORE With the support of teacher modelling and motivation children will be encouraged to explore new learning, develop new skills and to build up the resilience and self-confidence to make progress.
  • ENGAGE by providing an accessible, skills- based French curriculum that is structured and progressive, but which is also exciting, practical and inter-active. Ensure French is also celebrated outside the classroom eg. through displays, singing assemblies and a whole school French afternoon.
  • DEEPEN by having high expectations and enabling our children to confidently use their acquired language knowledge and skills through a variety of challenges, links to other curriculum areas and by encouraging independent enquiry.

Impact

The varied learning experiences of our MFL curriculum should enable children to see themselves as linguists and they will leave our school having developed an insight into, an interest in and a curiosity for the French language. They will take with them transferrable skills and knowledge to help them with their future language learning.
