Design & Technology

“There are three responses to a piece of design—yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.”

Milton Glaser

Miss Suzy Attfield

Subject Leader

Intent

At Woodingdean Primary School, we provide children with stimulating, fully inclusive design opportunities to understand a rapidly evolving world. We want the children to be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real life purpose.

Implementation

At Woodingdean Primary School we aim to:

  • INSPIRE by learning about a range of engineers, designers, chefs and architects to help create and develop their own ideas and designs.
  • EXPLORE by generating, developing, modelling and communicating their ideas through discussion, sketches, diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design.
  • ENGAGE by providing an exciting and immersive DT curriculum using a range of tools and practical equipment.
  • DEEPEN by evaluating their own ideas and products against their own design criteria, enabling them to stretch their knowledge and to further develop their independent inquiry.

Impact

A pupil leaving Woodingdean Primary School will know how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they will develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Children will understand that design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of our local community and nation.
