At Woodingdean we teach maths through a mastery approach. Mathematics is an exciting skill that helps us understand and explore our ever changing world. We create an atmosphere of wonder and curiosity, inclusive of all our children, within our maths learning so that our children are inspired to become well-rounded mathematicians. Our lessons provide rich opportunities where pupils are nurtured and motivated to discover links and patterns within different strands of maths in small manageable steps. We foster a growth mindset which makes our pupils resilient and determined. This positive mindset enables pupils to have the self-belief to use mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning and progressing. At our school, the majority of pupils will be taught the content for their year group only. They will spend time becoming true masters of content, applying and being creative with their mathematics.

We are committed to ensuring children develop their mathematical fluency and are encouraged to use reasoning to explain how they have solved a problem. Children are expected to use concrete resources from Reception to Year 6. This may involve exploring and manipulating numbers to using resources to help solve complex calculations further up the school. We ensure they are then pushed on and encouraged to move away from a visual representation and to using maths in its abstract form.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Implementation

  • INSPIRE by sparking a love of problem solving and pattern spotting.
  • EXPLORE by making meaningful connections between all aspects of mathematics and asking questions about the world around them.
  • ENGAGE by ensuring children have real world context in which children can apply their mathematical knowledge.
  • DEEPEN by taking a secure understanding, enabling our children to stretch their knowledge.

Teachers use a range of rich planning tools; including White Rose Maths and the NCTEM. This allows for the progression of skills to build over time which is evident across the school.

Impact

By the end of their time at Woodingdean we aim for children to be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics with conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Our pupils will be able to make rich connections across mathematical ideas and have developed their fluency and mathematical reasoning with increased independence. They will be competent in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They will be able to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.

AGE RELATED EXPECTATION

We often have parents ask "what should my child know at their age?" We call this Age Related Expectation (ARE). Click on your child's year group below to find out what your child should know by the end of this year.
